Amritsar
Amritsar is a house. Or is it an extended house; even a small village? It is a sprawling settlement on Khandallah Hill overlooking Wellington. The ‘village on the hill’ — an architectural experiment that Ian Athfield started in 1965 on the Khandallah hillside in Wellington.
It started life as Ath and Clare’s home, doubled as the office from 1968 and grew incrementally since. It is probably Ath's most important building, and his most personal and is home to the extended Athfield family, friends, employees and an architecural practice at the forefront of New Zealand design.
