Eileen Gray’s first foray into designing a standalone home is a masterwork that sits elegantly in its location overlooking the Mediterranean. Recently restored, E.1027 was designed as a holiday home for Gray, a furniture and interior designer, and her lover and collaborator, Jean Badovici. Built between 1926 and 1929 at Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, this pioneering example of modernism has a complicated history, coupled with a long and fractious restoration.
